“Until thought is linked with purpose there is no intelligent accomplishment.” – As A Man Thinketh
In her book, Unstoppable, Cynthia Kersey writes that a prominent psychologist asked 3,000 people, “What have you to live for?” An amazing 94% answered by saying they had no definite purpose for their lives – 94% percent!! With those kind of results, is it any wonder that there are so many unhappy people in our world today?
James Allen also tells us on this subject that, “They who have no central purpose in their life fall an easy prey to worries, fears, troubles, and self-pity.” When I was part of the 94% without a purpose, my life was constantly dark with all types of worries, fears and troubles. I was a ship without a rudder floating aimlessly in a raging sea. Nothing in my life seemed to go right.
I believe we were created with a purpose in our heart, and part of our journey here is to discern that purpose and to act on that purpose.
Purpose puts power and excitement in our lives. It keeps us from looking at the little picture of “me” and causes us to look at the big picture of “we.”
Ralph Marston, who writes The Daily Motivator, says “Your wishes, desires, hopes, dreams, opinions, likes and dislikes, at their very deepest level, revolve around a purpose. You can sense it. It is there. Pay attention to the times you really feel good about yourself. Ask yourself why this is so. Keep asking until you touch a purpose so fundamental it cannot be explained in any other way.”
Napoleon Hill, writing in the classic Think and Grow Rich, said that having a purpose was so important to success that people would have a different (and better) story to tell about their lives “if only they would adopt a DEFINITE PURPOSE, and stand by that purpose until it had time to become an all-consuming obsession!”
And that’s worth thinking about.
Vic,
I found this message of great importance. Around 7 years ago I had to give up a few of my dreams for family (son) ‘s reasons. By then, what I thought most was to leave a legacy of integrity, values, abstract qualities. One of my goals at that time was also to be committed to my Jewish Congregation, and start relationships with people abroad. My relationships have developed, I got to meet wonderful people through the Internet, such as Rabbis, Doctors, Coaches. But now, this year especially, my life purpose is even more linked to my Jewish Congregation, my son’s wellbeing, but also I need to extend my goals, outside family, towards accomplishing prosperous work, either in the sphere of my Rabbi, or also enlarge my deep interests in order to encompass international politics, world peace movements, relief for great causes such as Pakistan’s and Sudan’s victims. I follow the news on CNN everyday, and I know my background requires that I follow a path of further and greater commitment. I would appreciate it if you could comment on my posting.
Thank you so much in advance! Célia Leal
I may not be clear what my purpose is but I have plenty of goals and high aspirations, etc. Currently I’m struggling to make a new business idea support me. It is a service to others and it’s my passion. But then I just read: Do what you love and you’ll probobly starve! Yikes!!!! Tired of all the books and seminars that haven’t helped. Not yet anyway. But then I have heard: “Judge not by appearances”. Well what has been appearing has really got me by the throat. Still hangin in there!!!!!!!!!!!
Célia, thanks for sharing such great stuff with us. I don’t really look at it as you had to give up your dreams 7 years ago. I see it more as you needed to put a different date (for achievement) on your dreams. I also observe that there are some people who seem created for a single purpose and they never deviate from that (Mother Teresa comes to mind). But I also observe that for most of us, our purpose in life evolves as we evolve and our consciousness is raised to new heights. I think you need to follow the tug of your heart and if that takes you to a much bigger stage then so be it. Keep us posted on your progress. Shalom.
Vic, Thanks so much for ALL the messages you provide, each one brings another way / thought toward fulfilling what I believe to be my / our main and never ending purpose in life……….”To Make A Difference” in the lives of everyone we encounter in some way, shape or form!
Thanks Again……………bg
